Factories; hazards and working conditions
- The Industrial Revolution introduced producing goods in large workshops or what we know today called factories
- The industrial areas were unable to keep up with the number of new arriving workers which lead to overcrowds, unsanitary living and working conditions
- Workers were required to work 12 hours or more a day which often lead to sluggish and careless work. Although not proven, this can lead to bad quality of work and can affect the products and goods made
- Child labor existed in these factories and they worked long hours usually in dangerous jobs such as cleaning the machines
- Eventually new laws were enacted to restrict factories forcing its workers to work excessive hours a day. Below is a list of the laws that were enacted:
- Working Conditions were horrendous because of there was no guideline for safety or health

Factory Act 1819
Children are allowed to work a maximum of 12 hours a day
Factory Act 1833
Children under the age of 9 are not allowed to work in the textile industry, and children between the age of 10 - 13 are limited to working 48 hours a week.
Factory Act 1844
Women are allowed to work a maximum of 12 hours a day.
Factory Act 1847
The maximum working hours of children and women is reduced down to 10.
Factory Act 1850
The maximum working hours of children under 10 and women is imcreased to 10 and a 1/2 hours a day, but they not allowed to work before 6 AM or after 6 PM.
Factory Act 1874
The maximum working hours for workers is 56.5 hours a week.
